Marital Bliss... the Islamic Way

Marital Bliss… The Islamic Way

Saturday, 18th October 2014
Islamic Centre, Sheetal Tower

In a world shattered by household strife, JIH Mira Road held a special lecture tonight on ‘Marital Issues and their Islamic Solutions’ so that we may spend our married lives as per the guidance of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

The program started with the recitation of the 34th and 35th ayaat of Surah Nisa which speaks on the ways and means by which marital discord can be solved in an effective manner.

Thereafter, the speaker for the evening, eminent Islamic scholar, Janab Rashid Khan was invited to the dais to share his study on tonight’s subject.
Rashid sahab began by stating that a family is the basic unit of society and juxtaposed it with the dilapidating western society where the concept of family has been eroded since the Industrial Revolution of the 18th Century. Men and women both have their rights and responsibilities in Islam and while the husband is supposed to look after the earning part, the wife is supposed to look after the domestic affairs of the family.

The purposes of marriage, as enshrined in Islam are:
1.     To safeguard and protect the honour and chastity of men and women.
2.     To make the people pious.
3.     To instill love and affection and provide peace and security to the couple.
4.     To establish the limits set by Allah.
Thus, if the marriage transgresses upon the limits of Allah, it better be dissolved.

Speaking on the rights that Islam guarantees every wife, he said that wives are entitled to:
1.     Meher (dowry paid by the groom)
2.     Food and clothing as per the groom’s capacity and standard of living.
3.     A separate house or at least a separate room to give her privacy.
4.     A good treatment by the husband.
5.     An oppression-free environment.
6.     Justice between multiple wives.
7.     Khula (right to initiate legal separation)

As for the dissolution of marriage, it is a very elongated procedure if the Qur’anic principles are abided by in letter and spirit. Various intermediary steps including abstinence (ila) have been put forth to save the marriage. But at the same time, the exit-way of divorce has been kept open to save the couple from suffocating in a broken-down relationship.

After a brief question and answer session, the program concluded on a dua asking Allah to help us benefit from the enlightening lecture, inculcate Islamic guidance in our lives and spread the good word among our fellowmen.

Role of Muslims in India's Freedom Struggle

SOME ASPECTS OF THE FREEDOM STRUGGLE OUR HISTORIANS HAVE NEVER TOLD US….

I Bet You Were Never Told that…

  1. It was Emperor Aurangzeb who first asked the East India Company to quit India in 1686Surat!

  1. The first war against the British was fought almost 200 years before independence… The Battle of Plassey, wherein Nawab Sirajuddawla of Bengal was treacherously defeated by the British in 1757!

  1. The first signs of victory against the British were seen in Mysore where Nawab Hyder Ali first waged war against the British in 1782. He was succeeded by his son, Tipu Sultan who again fought them in 1791 and was eventually treacherously defeated and martyred in 1799. Tipu Sultan was the first General to use missiles in warfare!

  1. The Mujahid Movement was active during 1824 and 1831 under the leadership of Syed Ahmad Shaheed and his two disciples and they were successful in liberating the North-west province from British authority. Syed Ahmad Shaheed was nominated Khalifa, but the freedom was short lived and he was martyred in 1831!

  1. The last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar was to lead the War of Independence in 1857. A country-wide war was to begin simultaneously on the 31st of May 1857, but the Indians among the British army revolted before that on the 10th of May 1857!

  1. A startling 5,00,000 Muslims were martyred following the events of 1857, of which 5000 were Ulema (religious scholars). It is said that there was not a single tree on the Grand Trunk Road from Delhi to Calcutta but that an alim’s body was not found hanging on it for days together!

  1. Indian Ulema called for Jihad against the British and declared India as Darul Harb (Territory under Enemy control). This call found resonance all over the country with Muslims rising up against the British!

  1. To liberate the countrymen from the Cultural and Educational bondages of the colonial empire, towering centres of learning like the Darul Uloom Deoband, Darul Uloom Nadwa and the Aligarh Muslim University were established in the late 19th Century, which are still counted amongst the leading Indian seminaries!

  1. The Reshmi Rumaal Tehreeq was launched in 1905 by Shaikhul Islam Maulana Mehmood Hasan and Maulana Ubaidullah Sindhi to unite all the Indian states against the British. Maulana Mehmood was imprisoned in Malta and Kalapani for the same where he breathed his last!

  1. The Indian National Congress, from the time of its inception to independence has seen 9 Presidents who were Muslims!

  1. Barrister M. K. Gandhi served in a law firm in South Africa owned by a Muslim, who on his own expenses brought Gandhiji to India in 1916. Here, he started his agitation under the Ali Biradran (Ali Brothers)!

  1. The Mopla movement saw 3000 Muslims being martyred in a single battle!

  1. The Non-cooperation Movement and the Swadeshi Movement saw overwhelming Muslim participation. Janab Sabusiddiq who was the Sugar-king of that time gave up his business as a form of boycott. The Khoja and Memon communities owned the biggest business houses of that time and they parted with their treasured industries to support the boycott!

  1. The 1942 Quit India movement was actually planned by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was imprisoned on the 8th of August and sent to Ahmadnagar, because of which Gandhiji had to lead the movement on the 9th of August!

  1. Jyotiba Phule was sponsored by his neighbour, Usman Bagban in his educational activities, so much so that the school in which he taught was owned by Mr. Usman. His daughter, Fatima was the first girl student there and joined as a teacher thereafter!

  1. Muslim leaders always supported the Dalit cause. In the Round Table Conference held in London, Maulana Muhammad Ali Johar was lured into abandoning the Dalit cause in lieu of accepting all the other demands of the Muslims. But Maulana Johar refused to forsake the Dalits!

  1. When Dr. B.R. Ambedkar could not win the 1946 Central Elections, the Bengal Muslim League vacated one of its own seats and offered it to Dr. Ambedkar, who won it in the bypoll. This gesture by the Muslim League paved the way for his entry into the Constituent Assembly and the rest as they say, is history!

  1. Muslims freedom fighters were active in the field of journalism as well. Maulana Azad used his pen against the British despite being prevented by the colonial powers a number of times. In fact, the first journalist to be martyred in the cause of India’s Freedom Struggle was also a Muslim- Maulana Baqar Ali.

So why have these points, and many many such similar ones, been relegated to the dustbin by our Historians? Why are these events of History not taught in our History classes? Why are our children’s text books bereft of these historical facts? Why this prejudice? This is a deliberate attempt to discredit the Muslim leadership and indeed the Muslim masses, in order to spread in the Muslim community a sense of inferiority complex and to push them on a defensive stand. ‘What have you done for this nation to deserve the benefits of its independence?’ we are asked! The Muslim community has played a pivotal role in India’s Freedom Struggle and it is high time we Indians are made aware of this untold and hidden aspect of History.

India is again being enslaved by our politicians. It is time to liberate her again from domestic and international neo-colonialism and it is the Muslims of this land who will have to rise to the occasion once again! Are we ready?

(Excerpts from a lecture by Muhammad Aslam Gazi sahab at the Islamic Centre, Jamaate Islami Hind, Mira Road on the 16th of August 2014 on the topic- ‘Jang e Azadi me Musalmano ka kirdaar’)

Homosexuality is a threat to the society.

Homosexuality is a threat to the society.

Saturday, 21st December 2013
Islamic Centre, Mira Road

The issue of homosexuality is raising its ugly head again and this time the mainstream media is going overboard to support it. Arguments against this appalling trend are being either ridiculed or brushed beneath the carpet by calling them primitive or orthodox. It is very important that the other side of this debate is also looked into and judged by its merits.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, the Mira Road chapter of Jamaate Islami Hind (Mumbai) had organised a PowerPoint presentation on the topic- Homosexuality… an Analysis in Islamic perspective. The programme began with a recitation of a few ayaat from Surah A’araf where Allah has recounted the pervert inclinations of prophet Lut’s community. Thereafter, Dr. Parvez Mandviwala spoke at length on the topic of homosexuality, excerpts of which are presented below.

History:
Homosexuality, to start with, is not a new concept. It has been here since thousands of years and finds mention in the Bible and Qur’an, where the story of Prophet Lut’s community and the divine punishment meted out to it is narrated. Towards the end of the last century, homosexuality was raised up as a human rights issue and started getting legal status in the ‘developed’ world. When this profane wave reached Indian shores, it was de-criminalised by the Delhi High Court in 2009. Fortunately, the Supreme Court lived up to expectations and reinstated its criminal status. However, just a week later, the Central Government has once again filed for a review of the SC verdict.

Epidemiological data suggests that this vice is more common in the wealthy crust of society, for whom social norms are irrelevant; and that it is prevalent in about 2-13% of modern western population.

Arguments in support of homosexuality:
The arguments raised in support of homosexuality are rather frivolous. Their lives are not their own, contrary to their claim. They forget that it has been granted to them by Allah and they would be held accountable for it in the Hereafter. This act is not natural either, as it does not fulfil the basic purpose of sex… propagation of species. Crime also comes naturally to some people, but that does not make it legal in any way, does it? Any deviant nature noticed in this regard seems more as a result of environmental or psychological disturbances. When man’s carnal desires don’t get a vent in the natural way, the perverted mind vents it out on whoever he can lay his hands on- be it man, child or animal. Man’s basic nature is to be attracted to women and vice-versa. It is for this reason alone that one partner in any gay union is always masculine and the other feminine.

People who call it an act of love should refrain from defaming the word, because homosexuality is pure lust. The act being consensual also does not vindicate it, because it would still remain unnatural and pollute society. There are some who present the example of western tolerance towards this act. These people better take a look at the sorry state of society in the same western countries, where the very concept of family is getting elusive. There are some others who argue that others have no right to interfere in their private affairs. This argument is both naïve and rebellious at the same time as it pays no attention to the severe repercussions of their ‘private’ act.

Social repercussions:
The social balance of society gets upset because of this trend. Man and women have some well defined roles in a society and family. Same sex unions violate these rules. The much venerated family system would be dismantled and we will witness a negative population growth. Society in all would be driven by base desires instead of values and morals. Again, legalising homosexual unions today would open the floodgates for euthanasia, incest and what not!

Medical repercussions:
There is a host of infectious diseases like HPV, Hepatitis B and C, Herpes simplex, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV/AIDS. AIDS, as a matter of fact, was first detected in San Francisco in homosexual patients. It’s no wonder then that South Africa, where homosexuality enjoys legal status, is home to the largest density of AIDS patients. Physical ailments like haemorrhoids, fissures and anal cancer are also most likely to accompany acts of sodomy. Psychological problems abound in homosexuals. They are patients of reckless sexual behaviour, depression, sadism etc.

Ultimate repercussion:
Religious scriptures tell us that any person who practices this blasphemous act will have to burn forever in hell if he does not repent before he dies. The Holy Prophet has also cursed the ones who practice homosexuality. Mass punishments in the form of plague and destruction can also be expected as has already happened in the case of prophet Lut’s community. The arrival and pandemic spread of AIDS can also be counted here in this regard.

Preventive measures:
Counselling and education can help in the long run to root out this social menace. Islam has stressed on early marriages so that the youth can satisfy their sexual desires through legal ways. For those who cannot marry early, regular fasting is prescribed. Also, people are prohibited from undressing in front of others, even if they are members of the same gender. Cross-dressing is also strictly prohibited in Islam.

Punitive measures:
Islam recommends capital punishment for those convicted of homosexuality so as to cleanse the society and make it pure. Section 377 of the IPC also recommends jail term up to 10 years for those convicted of this crime. The fear of punishment is a strong detriment, and just as it helps to prevent other crimes, it is very much needed to pull the reins on this crime as well.

Despite all these negative points, why is this obnoxious movement gaining so much momentum? Let’s have a look at these factors as well.

Contributing factors:
The mainstream print and electronic media has acted rather irresponsibly in this regard. Objective journalism has been shown the door and most news reports are now a reflection of the media house’s own ideologies. This is a betrayal of time-honoured journalistic principles. Also, the double standards employed by the media in covering social issues are quite out in the open now. Using terms like freedom of expression in one case and using terms like moral policing in the other speaks a lot about their bias.

The political top-notch has also come out to support homosexuality for reasons best known to them alone. Intellectuals like Kapil Sibal and P. Chidambaram have also stood behind gays, in an apparent contempt of the SC verdict. Talks of legalising this crime through legislation are now doing the rounds.

There is a huge commercial lobby with vested interests in homosexuality like the pornography industry and the tourism industry. It is a shocking revelation that 10% of the tourism market caters to gays!

The religious fraternity has also bowed down before this disgusting uprising. It’s a matter of great shame that Pope Francis has also hinted at legitimizing homosexuality in Christendom. It is all the more disturbing to note that Muslims, who were once instrumental in pulling out medieval Europe from the dark ages, have foregone their responsibility of leading and reforming society.

Our responsibility:
Our responsibility in this regard is two-fold. First and foremost, it is essential that we refrain from supporting the gay right movement in any form, as participation in promoting or supporting any vice is akin to perpetuating it. Secondly, it is our duty to pull the plug on this disaster-in-the-making before it receives legal sanction by all the possible means that our constitution empowers us to use.

The presentation was followed by a prayer asking Allah to keep us steadfast in these deceptive times and the programme thus concluded with a firm resolution on the part of everyone present to fight this social menace tooth and nail.
